Weren't you told not to play with Fire?

Hey people:

I didn't listen to a few other things I was told along the way either.

Now that we have a few members in here I'm going to ask if anyone else is interested in playing with fire. Think poi, staff, fingers, swallowing, etc. I have a pretty good connection with several fire people in LA and would be burning with them but the drive is just too painful so I'm going to try to start something out here. I'm most familiar with and most interested in poi. The rest I'll either have to beg someone to come out to teach those interested in it or we'll go there. My hope is that someone that has some coreography skills will be interested in this activity and we can start our own fire troup out here.

Things we need to address that I'll get to when I can unless someone else beats me to it.

Performance insurance. This will help us get permission from the local authorities to actually play with fire both in a performance and practice contexts. This may actually require a nominal fee for membership but the assurance that you're not going to be put in jail for arson if you accidentally starting a fire and the peace of mind that you'll have knowing that even if you do accidentally start a fire you're not going to be skewered financially.

Permits and we need to establish a working relationship with the fire marshall(s) and other enforcement type agencies in the area.

We need a location to burn at! This is essential and pretty self explanatory. In LA the use of Dockweiler Beach is pretty much the norm but there are sometimes issues with wind and the place is closed earlier than most burners would like.

An inexpensive place for hardware. Things I know some people like to use include kevlar fabric, cotton batting (100% cotton), kerosene, white gas (naptha), lamp oil, ball chain and related hardware, heavy leather, and fire extinguishers. I'm sure there may be more that other people use but this is pretty much the list of stuff that I've seen used with relative safety.

If anyone has or can help with these basics it would be much appreciated. Anyone that is directly in contact with any of the agencies that we'd need to register with is highly encouraged to help.

Anyone of any skill level and any age range is encouraged to participate.

Lates,

I actually am starting fire fans for bellydance in the next few months (we have been pretty busy so new things take some time to get to) and what I learn I will share. As far as performing goes, I don't know if I can dedicate a lot of my time to a new group. I'm working on my time management :)

Hey trip, word from the wise...

Most performers use a group policy that covers $50,000 in fire damage. It adds up fast. Unless you go with a private policy with higher fire coverage (which runs in the $1000's/year) you can still get skewered fiancially. You can still be arrested for arson. Usually you'll get 'public endangerment' as a blanket term by officials, even if you're being safe. I lived in the IE for a while, and the police aren't the most understanding, nor are the fire officials... but considering the high level of damage fire causes in dry areas like yours, play safe...

You might contact Tedward, the LA BM shin, either through the fire tribes, or NAFAA.org, he's worked with LA officials frequently.

    ave fun!

      Hey MT:

Fire Insurance and other issues are exactly what we're covering when we meet.

I am in contact with Tedward as he has been in my personal circle of contacts for a LONG while now. I used to live in LA and still consider it home. When I can buy the house I want I'll be moving back.

The police here are what I would qualify as Nazis. When a through and through right wing white Christian woman who happens to be 60+ and is a regular church attender and is a very "productive" member of society is downright terrified of the police there is something wrong with the situation. Having had my OWN interactions with the gestapo out here I'd have to agree with her. Fortunately I am light enough of a skin color I didn't get beaten (this time) though they did successfully damage my car and it looks, quite frankly, like they're going to get away with it (I can't find a part I need to complete the repair so, because it's going to take longer than the time frame I have it's looking very much in their favor).

Thanks for the advice and input.

      Trip
